ASSATEAGUE COASTAL TRUST: Native Plant Sale in Berlin, MD
This is my second annual trip to the Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) Native Plant Sale, which is my Mother’s Day treat to myself, even though it falls the day before Mother’s Day. I tend to think of Mother’s Day as planting day. It is the day that I have determined that the last danger of frost is safely past. The day I can plant my toddler tomato plants and other goodies that I dream of throughout the winter.
The plant sale offers both native flowers and vegetables.
This year, I didn’t need any flowers, but I did need some herbs and vegetables since the tomatoes and peppers that I started from seed did not do very well this year. I ended up with basil, Rosemary, Green zebra tomato and Marzano tomato. Both tomatoes are varieties that I have never grown before, so I am very excited.
Last year, I picked up herbs and flowers. The plants that are offered by ACT are all native plants, so I figured I would have the most success growing them here. Genious, huh?! This shopping event is one of my exceptions to the get as many plants as you can for free principal. I mean, I am being a do gooder after all by shopping here where the proceeds go toward protecting the local coastal bays.
The flowers that I picked up last year included asters, guara and some little grassy looking ground cover that gets really pretty blue flowers on it in the spring and I can’t remember for the life of me what the name of it is.
I had success with everything last summer, my favorite being the guara, which unfortunately did not survive the winter. It doesn’t like wet ground and this winter was plenty wet!
This spring, I was too late getting to the plant sale to pick up new guara. The selection is much better if you order your plants in advance online. A fact that I really need to remember for next year.
But wait, there’s more, this year there was a local glass artisan, Jason Giusti of Jagged Art Glass with his wares on display. I love glass and he had some really neat pieces that looked like clear glass layered over swirls of color.
