CHANGING THE FACE OF THE HOUSE: How Ideas Are Born
Dreams are born every day in my head. I don’t think I ever run out of ideas for ways to improve our house. I only run out of money….I can have some expensive ideas. Today I’d like to share how my ideas are born and develop very slowly into some form of reality.
Take the front of our house for instance. When we bought it it was a not very pretty shade of tan. In fact, I hated it! The pictures look much better than the color did in real life. Even worse, there was no front porch. Oh how I wanted a front porch, but at least there was one on the back of the house.
Yes, someone quit painting when they got above the second floor. Neighbors tell me that the painter didn’t have a ladder tall enough. Urban legend? I’ll probably never know!
As you may have read in another post, we had other projects to work on and pay for before worrying about the color of the house. So I did what I always do, starting sketching up some ideas. First a front porch and a little landscaping.
I’m not sure we could even build this porch because town building code only lets you build within a certain number of feet from the sidewalk and I think we might not have enough space. Oh, but it would be a nice porch to sit on and watch the world go by. One of the things I love about a front porch is that it gives you a chance to meet your neighbors as they walk into town or take their dogs for a walk.
If we build on the current foot print of our front stoop and add some trim to the house, we can make the house look a lot more inviting. There are so many beautiful houses in Berlin. It’s going to take a more than a little effort to transform our ugly duckling into a beautiful swan!
Obviously, I eat when I sketch, thus the pizza sauce on this one. The addition of trim would really make our house look more worth of Berlin, MD style! However, we still need to save some more money for this to happen. Especially since it would be really nice to update the siding at the same time…maybe some cement fiber shingles. See how one idea just feeds the next one. So we started with some paint on the front door.
Notice how a storm blew some of our lovely plastic shutters off, which of course broke. So all the shutters had to come off, revealing yet another paint color.
I couldn’t take it any more. The house had to be painted. We hired a painter for this and I am so glad we did. A job that would have taken us the whole summer took him less than a week. No more peeling paint on the trim.
Also I helped myself to plants that my mother was dividing. Still a long way to go to get to beautiful landscaping, but it’s a start.
Next, maybe we can start adding trim. Here are some of the details I’m dreaming of.
Then maybe we can add a second story to the back porch. A screened in sleeping porch off of our bedroom.
