EVENTS IN BERLIN, MD: Oh The Things You Can Do
So Many Things Going On
It seems like there is always something going on in Berlin. So many things to lure me out to play, instead of working on the house. So many things that after being here for two years, I still haven’t even been to all of them. If you need something to do while you are visiting Berlin, Md., or you are planning a visit, keep these events in mind. You will be sure to have a good time.
Second Friday Art Stroll – Stroll the town shops, restaurants and other businesses, as they stay open into the evening. Many of the businesses have the art of local artists on display and from what I have seen there is plenty of talent to keep you keep you coming back month after month. The hard part for me is not buying everything! When it is nice out, you will also find live music on the streets and also some local artisans with stands set up along Main Street.
Concerts on the Lawn – Bring a chair or blanket and a picnic and enjoy live music on the lawn of the Calvin Taylor Museum on the second Sunday of the month from June through September. This is one of my favorite and most relaxing ways to wind up a weekend of activity. The concerts usually start at about 6:00pm.
Spring in Berlin, Md
April brings our newest event, our Cool Town Party. This event was started in 2014 to celebrate Berlin winning the Coolest Small Town in America designation. See more on that here. Be prepared for music, food, shopping and just a general fun time. The next party is scheduled for April 18th, 2015, which also kicks off “Take Pride in Berlin Week”, a week of making our town look its best.
Also in April are:
- Spring Celebration on April 4, 2015
- Clean Up Berlin Day on April 11, 2015. Volunteer to help spruce up the town parks. A great family activity and a wonderful way to meet our neighbors.
- Heritage Festival on April 25th, 2015
May Play Day May 8th, 2015 – This an event that I have to make it to that highlights the music of local musicians from all different genres, kicking off another season of outdoor music in Berlin.
Jazz and Blues Fest – Bring a chair so you can bounce back and forth between the concerts on the north and south ends of Main Street. There is plenty of food and drink available, so you can stay all day. This is a full day of outdoor music and fun.
Spring Cruisers on May16th, 2015, you can hit the streets to check out tons of classic cars. This is a fun event with plenty of cars and trucks to look at and a chance to chat with their owners. Be sure to stop and chat because some of the owners have great stories to go with their great looking vehicles! I saw the coolest old milk delivery truck last spring.
Memorial Day Parade on May 25, 2015. What can make you feel more patriotic than watching a parade in a classic small town, full of houses decorated in red, white and blue? Except for maybe waving a flag and eating an ice cream cone while you are watching. Have a bike? You could decorate it, add a few cards to your spokes and join in the patriotic spirit.
Touch a Truck Day on May 30th, 2015. This is a dream come true for kids and for those of us who are still kids on the inside. All that shiny equipment that you are never allowed to touch… now you can. Plus you can climb on some of it and ask endless questions!
Say I Do – meet vendors to help make your wedding perfect. I confess to never attending this one, since I haven’t planned a wedding for a while!
June brings the High Heel Race. This is a fun, spirited and entertaining event where men and women alike don high heels to race down Main Street, all to raise money for Women Supporting Women. I am not brave enough to run in heels myself, (I can twist my ankle walking in flip flops!) but I always enjoy the fun. I never fail to be impressed by those who can run in heels and look good doing it!
In July one of my favorite events occurs, The Bathtub Races.
Local businesses can enter a “bathtub” on wheels into the races, which occur in heats, two bathtubs at a time. The races take place on Main Street and I highly recommend showing up early to get a good viewing spot. Don’t bother bringing a chair if you want to see. If you sit, you will see only the backs of other cheering fans. To qualify as a “bathtub”, the vessel must hold two gallons of water, a person and it must have wheels. Come check out the creative vehicles people come up with.
August brings a downtown Sidewalk Sale and Jeep Jam Events, which include an off road course, music and fireworks. I didn’t know about the Jeep Jam events until too late this year, but I sure hope to check it out next year. Also in August, another of my favorite events, The Peach Festival. The Peach Festival usually falls on the first weekend of August. It offers all things peach from delicious fresh peaches, to baked goods and ice cream. There are also pie eating and baking contests, crafts, games and the ever adorable Mr. and Miss Peach. This event truly feels like small town happiness!
The Annual Fiddler’s Convention takes place in September. This year’s festival was great fun. Kevin Solivan and Dirty Kitchen performed, national talent, free in the streets of our town. What a performance! They followed last year’s contest winners the Woodpicker’s – great pickin’ and fantastic harmony. The local talent is amazing. I am always amazed at how much talent the youth brings to the contest. A jam session closes out the weekend on Sunday. The only downside to the event this year was that I had camera problems, so no good pictures to share!
Fall and Winter Events
Also in September, is a Say I Do event with all things bridal. Also we have Shakespeare in the Street to look forward too. Read more about this year’s Brown Box Theatre production here. Or you can join us for Paint Berlin and watch artists on the streets of Berlin paint the town. You can even buy paintings fresh off the easel.
October brings back the Fall Cruisers, just as much fun as it is in the spring! This year on October 10, catch the Berlin Little League Parade in honor of the great ball players that this town turns out! On October 18th, the Oktoberfest fun begins. Have some beer, some German food and some German music. It is Berlin after all.
Get into the spirit of Christmas, on November 28th with the town Tree Lighting and Holiday Arts Night. Christmas carols and good cheer fill the streets. Kick off your shopping with an art purchase from a local artist. This marks the start of Berlin’s Victorian Christmas season. If you can’t get in the holiday mood in Berlin, you may never get in the mood!
In December, ring out the year, as the ball falls in the center of town. Enjoy camaraderie, drink and music. Fun, fun, fun! I love this event.
January, February and March are the quiet months. With all the action this town sees, everyone needs a rest. But you can still catch the Second Friday Art Strolls. Or you can catch a yoga class, try a wine or beer making class, make your own blown glass ornament or do a little shopping for yourself.
