FINALLY REFURBISHING THE LAST BEDROOM: Follow Our Progress on the Green Room
Finally, we are starting on our third and last bedroom renovation. We are starting with a green textured ceiling, green painted floors and wallpaper with a green vine and violet flowers. In our usual creative fashion, we call this the green room. We have just begun work on this room, so it will be a while before you see the finished photos of this room. Instead, I am going to post as progress is made. In other words, you are going to witness first hand how long this actually takes us – one weekend at a time.
Here is the room we are starting with:
This weekend we stripped wallpaper. Brad, who has never done this before thought we should try scraping with just some stripper, a tiger and some scrapers (with no replacement blades). After fifteen minutes, he was headed to Home Depot, to get us a new toy.
While this new little toy is not quite as effective as the commercial steamers that you can rent, it did a great job for just under $50. I have to confess that I actually enjoy stripping wallpaper. It’s an upper body workout for sure, but it is so satisfying seeing progress. Apparently I am a fan of immediate gratification.
My tips….. Where plastic gloves because your hands get pretty wet. Start steaming at the top of the wall and work your way down because the water runs down the wall and will start loosening the glue ahead of you. I actually prefer a wide putty knife to the scraper, but Brad liked the scraper. Keep a bucket of water and stripper with some sponges handy. If you use this mixture on the little bits of glue left on the wall it’s very helpful.
Try not to notice in that picture that I am breaking my own rule of working from the top down. I’m pretty sure that’s why Brad actually took this picture.
After stripping, Brad washed the walls down. Next patching the plaster. Here is our room after about 8 hours of work. I love this room It’s the sunniest room in our house!
