IN THE BEGINNING: Falling in love with Berlin, MD
Who knows where it all began?
A love of small towns and a love of old houses born in me when I was so young that I didn’t realize that the whole world did not love the same things. A time when I believed that everyone felt and believed the same things, that all humans were essentially the same. The same as me that is. Over the years, many of them, I have learned many things, among them, that I am more different than the same in my thinking and interests than many people. Still there is a love of old buildings and the communities of people that have grown around them that a few others cherish as well.
I get excited about old craftsmanship, the detail of a small window and the trim in the peak of a building and in the way a porch wraps from the front of a house to the side, drawing you in. In these details, I imagine the lives of friends relaxing on the porch, the chores of the day behind them as the neighborhood children ride their bikes on the street and play hopscotch on the sidewalk , grass lined jars sitting at the edge of the yard awaiting captured fireflies.
I imagine store shop owners chatting as they close up there shops for the evening, many of whom will see each other again later at the school play, a town meeting, or listening to another neighbor play his guitar at the local watering hole. A community of people looking out for one another and taking care of their small community.
So there, up front an out loud is my fantasy. Where other girls spend time fantasizing about being a princess or moving to the big city and wearing the latest fashions and sporting the trendiest hair dos or even dream of become CEO of a large corporation, I have always dreamed of being part of a tight knit community of people, about saving old buildings and honoring their craftsmanship and about living closer to nature. Not that I wouldn’t mind having a great hair cut or being treated like a princess occasionally.
I ended up in Berlin trying to live out my fantasy. A town that I first saw in a movie. (Part of my small town infatuation has always involved scouring movie credits for the filming locations.) Years later, a visit revealed a town that looked like it would work for me. Great buildings, a small town with access to amenities of a few larger towns, close enough to home that I could still spend time with our parents, a nature loving town, with access to beaches, biking, kayaking, a town that supports local artisans.
The proximity to the beach is what tapped into my new husband’s fantasy. For years I have been dragging him around on my small town explorations. I love mountains and have tended toward mountain towns, where it is generally cooler and thus less of my fair skin would be regularly exposed to the suns harsh rays (evidence of the princess inside of me). Brad, has the beat of the surf in his heart. In Berlin, we set out to create our place in the world together.
