MAIN STREET’S NEWEST ADDITION: On What Grounds Coffee House
Nestled between The Maryland Wine Bar and The Church Mouse on Main Street in our own Berlin, MD, is a new coffee shop called On What Grounds Coffee House. Brad and I stopped in on Saturday night for a little inner warmth. We were originally heading for the Wine Bar, but it happened to be closed. At first I panicked because I thought they might be closed forever, not just the night, but I quickly realized that this was not a permanent dilemma in life, that they were still going to be there are many more nights. I was also quickly distracted from my disappointment, when I realized the new coffee house was still open. So in we went!
We received a friendly greeting from one of the owners, Dana Gottloeb. After checking out the drink menu which includes coffee, latte, cappuccino, chai tea and hot chocolate, I ordered a hot chocolate and Brad an Americana. Oh yeah, we also had a raspberry crumb cake. The coffee house also offers chocolate treats handmade by co-owner and chocolatier, Denise Tolson. Oh heaven! There are also scones, croissants, crumb cakes, tiramisu and cheesecake. That’s just the desserts that I can remember. Then, just in case, you aren’t the sweet eating type, they have breakfast sandwiches that you can get anytime of the day.
You can hunker down in cozy seating and watch the world go by on Main Street. But wait…there’s more! If you have been to the Wine Bar you will remember that this spot used to be part of the Wine Bar, the part where the live music was. And that music will keep coming! When the Wine Bar and Coffee House are both open, the door between them is open, so you can have coffee and wine and music. Be still my beating heart!
It gets even better. Now I am probably going to show my age when I say this, but I am really excited about the hours. They open early. Yippee! 6 am on weekdays, and if I remember correctly, 7 am on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday. On the flip side they are open until 6 pm on weekdays and until 8 pm on Saturday (which I also love). Sorry, I can’t remember how late they are open on Sunday. As it is, I am pretty impressed with my memory. I did point out before that I’m not twenty anymore.
All in all, we were very happy with our stop. My hot chocolate was creamy and yummy. The raspberry crumb cake was a delicious treat and Brad’s coffee made him smile. We’ll be back for sure. How long do you think I’ll be able to hold out before I have to get some of those hand crafted chocolates? I have to go back anyway to ask if one of these two owners is a lawyer. I mean look at their name and their logo!
