OUR GARDENS: After The Weeds Were Cleared
After ridding ourselves of the many weeds and vines in our Berlin, MD yard, I was eager to get started planting some flowers and vegetables. There was one hitch. We were spending all of our money on making the house loveable and liveable, so I had to pull the landscaping off on a budget! This meant a couple of things. Saving as many plants as I could and getting new plants dirt cheap!
WHAT WE DID
I had some great plants worth saving including an amazing butterfly bush, many iris, some old lilacs, forsythia, hydrangea, some rose of sharon and a struggling rose bush. I pruned and pruned and managed to keep them all, although it may be a few years before they look very good. The big exception is the butterfly bush, which I divided, so now I have three thriving butterfly bushes. It’s nice to have something that gives a little immediate satisfaction! The hummingbirds and butterflies love this bush……more reasons to make me happy!
To help cut costs, I divided plants from any friend or relative willing to let me and I started some flowers and vegetables from seed. Some of the flowers didn’t bloom in their first summer because they were just too young, but they look healthy and I have high hopes for this summer.
Here are some before and after photos comparing our first and second summers. I can’t wait to share photos of our third summer in our Berlin garden!

There is still a little more bush to be pruned and eliminated, but progress is being made. Here’s to hoping that the 2015 summer pictures are even better!
Check back in a week or so to see the transformation of the front yard so far.
