THE CHANGING FACE OF BERLIN: What’s New in Berlin, MD?
If spring is the time for rebirth and new beginnings, it is most certainly spring in Berlin, MD! We’ve got new stores in town and more new things coming, plus a few business have been moving up to larger spaces. Here’s the scoop:
Uncle Jon’s, the Newest Shop In Town
Old or young, male or female, Uncle Jon has something for you!
Jon Conley has opened up shop in the old Bungalow Love space at 12 William Street in Berlin. Md. He offers handmade soaps, body scrubs and other fragrant treats for your body. I grabbed some fresh cotton scented laundry detergent that smells great. I have yet to try it out, but I’m excited because Jon tells me I will only need to use about a tablespoon per load. The soaps, which he makes on site using a cold process, come in many scents and have great labels that his daughter has been working hard on. When you stop in be sure to check out the label on the Mother Earth soap – super cool!
You will find soap for babies and soap with manly scents, like the beer soap (which will not make you smell like you sprayed a keg all over your clothes) or cool beachy scents like Dune Grass.
If you are a guy with a dry, tough beard, check out the beard balm and beard oil. One look at Jon and you’ll know that he has fully tested these goods on himself.
In addition to treats for your body, you can pick up some surf wax or even a custom made surf or skate board or how about some wooden toys.
Apparently, Jon is a man of many talents and friendly too. I just met him and I felt like I was talking to an old friend! Best of luck to you Jon!

So if Uncle Jon’s moved into the old Bungalow Love space where did Bungalow Love go?
Well, that would be to the old Bustle Space at 9 S Main St., Berlin, MD. There is a lot more space in the new Bungalow Love, so you can find even more handmade and fair trade goodies. If you are lover of handcrafted jewelry and other handmade items, this a spot you shouldn’t miss, but be sure to look in the right place – S Main Street. You can find Bungalow Love on Facebook for all the latest info.
Of course, the next logical question is where did Bustle go? Bustle is at 16 Broad Street, once home to the barber shop. I know I’ve mentioned before that I haven’t had a need to shop for a wedding dress in a while, but if I ever have a really fancy occassion to dress for, I think I’ll need to check out Bustle because they have some pretty good looking dresses on their website, bustleonbroad.com. Great website name by the way.
Berlin’s Newest Restaurant
Most of you probably noticed by now, that Tex-Mex has closed it doors, but just opened in the same space is Leaky Pete’s Oyster Bar and Chop House. In fact it’s so new that the Grand Opening is this coming weekend. I stopped in to take a peak at the menu, which I am eager to try, but I am most excited about the oyster menu. I mean we are just a few minutes from water and this is the first Berlin restaurant to focus on some of the local seafood. Yay!
I can’t wait to try this place out. I’ll keep you posted on that outing.
But wait there’s more…. an art gallery.
Art in the Fields i starting to show some signs of life on the outside. New planters filled with trees and other pretties have sprung up out side, along with some benches to relax on. Just that helps to make this building look better all ready, because it was certainly not the most beautiful building in town.
I am eager to see what Design Resources does with this property to redeem it. There is rumor about town that there are going to be some nationally and even globally renowned artists on display here. I sure hope that’s true, because it would make at least this girl pretty happy. Bring on the culture!
Who knows what we’ll see next, but I’m always looking.
