WEEDS: Tackling the Weeds In our Berlin, MD Home
When Brad and I bought our house in Berlin, MD, we bought more than just a fixer-upper house, we bought a small jungle. Our back yard had more kinds of weeds and vines than I had ever known existed.
Two of those vines, I have noticed are very common to Berlin; Boston Ivy and Wild Grape Vines. There were vines in our yard that were so big that I could swing from them like Tarzan!
Our first order of business was to get the ivy off of the house because it was starting to pull off some of the siding. The ivy came off the house relatively easily, but then I had to dig out all the roots so that it would not keep growing back. After days of digging, I thought I had it all, but now, almost three years and a little Round-Up later, I still find a little piece here and there trying to surface. But the improvement is amazing and I can sleep at night without having nightmares about my house being swallowed before the sun rises.
Next came the attack on the wild grape vines, which there were far more of. This involved hacking, digging, spraying an a lot of sweat.
Then I took out some half dead bushes and weed trees that were hiding under the vines. I attempted to save some of my favorite bushes. I am still nursing some of the hydrangeas, lilacs and Rose of Sharon bushes. Happily a beautiful butterfly bush has survived and thrived!
Keep an eye out in the next few weeks for some before and after pictures of the yard as it looks now. There is still plenty of work to be done, but progress is definitely being made and our yard feels about twice as large.
